Traditions

They are powerful. Emotional. Binding. And deceptively simple to create.

All you have to do is: do the same thing—say, cook blueberry pancakes for breakfast—at the same time each week or month or year—say, Sunday morning— with the same people—say, your kids—and voila! You have a tradition!

Like planting a seed and watching as the roots sink down, take hold, and grow, these repetitive acts take on a life of their own. They grow into our hearts and take on emotional significance, drawing power from the bonds of little shared memories laid down, one at a time, layer upon layer.

It’s the ultimate warm and cozy, happy-making DIY, totally customizable to fit your life!

Sometimes we start traditions intentionally. Sometimes they are happy accidents!

Growing up, my kids all slept in the same room on Christmas Eve while I wrapped presents and got things ready for Christmas morning. They would all watch a movie together—to keep them from coming out and seeing what I was doing. The one movie they could almost always agree on was Jingle All the Way, with Arnold Schwarzenegger. At some point, after a few years of doing this, we had a tradition on our hands! Now, my kids are grown and many of them are married. My daughter texted the other day to ask for a copy of Jingle All the Way to watch with her husband. It warms my heart. We may be a crazy family, but we have fun together!

Traditions are simple, powerful ways to infuse feelings of happy togetherness into things as simple as blueberry pancakes, or Arnold Schwarzenegger movies.

Simple. Powerful. DIY. And Happy-making!
