Ok! I did it!
I posted some new pages on the blog with my much requested book lists, including
Books for Everyone, and
Books to Help Kids Love Math. (yes! It’s possible!)
And I’m feeling kind of happy about it!
I’ve spoken to several School groups, Moms’ groups, and others around the country about how to help kids love books. I’ve published some articles and have written (and am hoping to publish!) young adult novels. I truly believe anyone can develop a love of books. One great thing you can do to help is to make reading fun. Read bedtime stories- even to your teens. (Who wouldn’t be happy to hear a chapter of an amazing novel each night?) Give books as birthday presents. Let your kids see you reading and hear you talking about how amazing your book is. Pretty soon they’ll be begging for a piece of the action. =)
I’ve spent about 60 bazillion hours this past week lying in my dentist’s chair, staring at her ceiling, trying to drown out the noise of the drill with my iPod. Several fillings and crowns later, I am able to chew again (food is so wonderful!) and to think about something other than trying Not to think about what was happening to my teeth.
And I decided to think about books. The few hours I had away from the dentist I spent curled up on the couch reading good books and sipping cool drinks. (I didn’t think this through very well and I let her put temporary crowns on both sides of my mouth at the same time. The crowns kept falling off if I ate anything that involved mastication.) Let me just say, books are wonderful. They can transport you to places where dentists don’t even exist.

Thank you for sharing your list. I love reading and luckily my 3 year old (almost 4) also enjoys it. Are there any chapter books you recommend for her or is it too soon?

Yes! There are some great chapter books to read aloud to almost-4-year-olds! I'd start with Betsy-Tacy by Maud Hart Lovelace. It's about two 5-year-olds' fun adventures, and sounds like it's right on her listening level! Homer Price and Pipi Longstocking are also good for young kids. I would also suggest Alexander Dumas' The Three Musketeers. I got in for free on with my phone. I decided to give it a preview just for the heck of it. I lost several nights of sleep pounding my way through it. Really action packed. Ideal for someone who is not a big reader.
